Let me establish some credibility. See, my beginnings. That is me. Now on to the organization.
“Pace” and “Doctrine”
Why those words? What significance does it hold? Is it random?
I was drawn to those words, especially in combination for a few reasons. Let’s start in order. PACE
When we say the word pace, we probably think of speed in terms of minutes/mile (ie, 7:10 minutes/mile is my easy pace). But beyond that, we “pace” ourselves in races, in events, and in life. No one can go all out, all the time, 100% of the time. It is about “pacing” yourself– having the self control to be moderate. Last but not least, I think of PACE in a military context: primary, alternate, contingency, and emergency. In the military context, it is about having a comms plan. Your first course of action is the primary. Second, the alternate and so on. We can directly transfer this to having a plan for ourselves in our training. For example, running 100 miles week with no injuries and no distractions with 3 core days a week is my primary plan. Sometimes that needs to get tweaked, so I’ll go with my altnernate course of action. You get the idea. Just because you can’t do one activity doesn’t mean your plans are foiled.
DOCTRINE
This is another term derived from a military context. When I think of doctrine, I think of the Ranger handbook. Doctrine is the fundamentals, and it is easily taught. You want to know battle drill 1A? Ranger handbook. Now, transfering this to a training context, it is about the philosophy and underpinning fundamentals of training. There is a science behind strength training and endurance running, and I largely stand by those fundamentals. Where I stray a bit from the definition, is that I have my own doctrine, my own set of underlying beliefs garnered through experience that make up my doctrine.
Putting the two together, you get something like “The set of rules (doctrine) that govern smart training (pace).”
Vision
I want this organization to culminate in a brick and mortar, high end gym in my home town of Spokane, WA. In the gym, several treadmills that aren’t locked at 12 MPH but are able to sustain 4:30/mi paces or faster. High end gym equipment for people who take their training seriously. Saunas, pools, and bio-testing machines (VO2, lactate, sweat rate, gait analysis and more).
That is the end goal. For now, it is just a community with a similar style of thinking.
Values
After being in several organizations with strong values, I am enumerated with values and being well rounded, it is hard to chose several. For now, lets just go with discipline, integrity, and consistency.
